How do you clean a ceramic hair straightener?

My straightener is a CHI ceramic straightener, and it smells horrible when I straighten my hair.
I think it's because of all the hairspray/hair styling wax I use.
So how can I clean a flat iron without ruining/damaging it?

only when it's cool and unplugged
use a damp cloth to wipe it down, then apple some rubbing alcohol to a cotton ball or pad and use it to remove what ever gunk is on the iron.
